For four weeks leading up to Saturday, February 3, Advanced French students prepared for an on stage performance, in French, at Première Scène 2024, held at the Lycée Français de New York. During that time, the juniors and seniors also practiced their lines with Madame Anderson and a French professional drama teacher. The play, Rhinoceros by Eugene Ionesco, is a satire of fascism preceding WWII and was related to the French existentialist/absurd movement students had studied in class during the first semester.

“It is an excellent way to learn new expressions, vocabulary words, work on pronunciation, and memorization,” Madame Anderson explained. “Delivering in a foreign language allows our students to gain huge confidence.”

Following the play, Olivia B. ’24, Olivia G. ’25, Dakota H. ’25, Emily M. ’25, Elizabeth P. ’25, Camille B. ’25, Ally K. ’25, Eloise J. ’25, and Sophia O. ’25 were awarded for their outstanding achievements, and won the prize for the most energetic and positive performance.
